New York
Writing a guide for a first-time visit to New York City is almost as frightening as the trip itself. How can you narrow down the millions of options in this incredible city? How do you recommend “must-do” activities in a city with so many? This post took some time to complete, but I persevered, and it is finally updated for 2024.
When to Visit?
The two most enjoyable seasons in the city are fall (late September to November) and spring (April to May). The levels of humidity are pleasant, the air is clean, and the number of visitors is quite small.

Here’s an entire season analysis with pros and cons:
Fall is, in my opinion, the finest season to visit! The city is beautiful and smells great. The main disadvantage is that the climate might be unreliable at times.
Winter – the tourists have obviously left the city, but it can still be extremely chilly. While it may be beneficial to visit and acquire insight into true local life in New York City, it may not be the best time for a first visit. The exception is December, when the city is so beautiful that it makes you forget about the cold!
Spring – the city has a renewed sense of energy; wandering around in the temperate weather and seeing the flowers bloom around you is really pleasant. Cons include the possibility of rain and the unpredictable nature of the weather.
How to Get Around
Walking is one of my favorite ways to experience New York City. Don’t worry, most of the regions you end up in will be safe. Of course, consider the advantages and disadvantages of walking against the amount of time you have available. Everything in the city appears to be close, but the distances might be rather long.
The subway is a particularly affordable way to travel about New York City. Yes, it is dirty and busy, and certain trains are canceled on weekends, but it does exist and can carry you from most points A to B. Use it! I don’t recommend purchasing a MetroPass because all stations now accept payment via Tap to Pay using your phone or credit card. Tip: Use the same credit card to pay for all rides after the tenth in a week, which are free.
What to do in NYC?
I did my best to narrow it down to twenty must-do activities for your first visit to New York City. Of course, the amount you can achieve depends on when and how long you stay.
Take the free Staten Island Ferry to view the Statue of Liberty. Please do not ride it during the morning or evening rush hours. If you’re willing to splurge, schedule a river cruise with views of the Statue!
Shop at the charming boutiques in SoHo and admire the architecture. My personal favorites are Sezane and McNally Jackson, which are followed by a visit to Elizabeth Street Gardens.
Explore the beautiful West Village, my absolute favorite area in New York City! I’ll publish a neighborhood guide shortly, but in the meantime, check out my Instagram story highlights for West Village.
